Sleep Apnea Solutions Montreal
Do you snore? Do you feel tired during the day? You may be suffering from sleep apnea. It is estimated that 90 million people in North America have breathing related illnesses leading to snoring and sleep apnea.
Snoring is often thought of by many as a strictly social problem, yet it is a symptom of a serious health risk. It occurs when the tongue partially blocks the airway, whereas in sleep apnea, the airway is completely obstructed , and no air passes through to the lungs. Both situations are harmful since the patient is deprived of oxygen, which in turn taxes all the internal organs. Patients who suffer from snoring/sleep apnea have an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes due to high blood pressure which results from lack of oxygen.
Sleep Apnea Symptoms
- Night Sweats
- Memory Trouble
Snoring/sleep apnea range in severity from mild to moderate to very severe. Some patients actually stop breathing multiple times during the night. These patients never reach the deep stages of sleep that are essential for proper rest, and therefore often wake up tired, irritable, have morning headaches, and find it difficult to concentrate.
Most patients with sleep apnea are prescribed CPAP machines by physicians which consists of an air compressor that forces air into the nose to open up the airway. These are effective and necessary for patients with severe sleep apnea, but the problem is that 80 % of patients stop using them after 1 year.
Oral appliances fabricated by trained dentists are another effective treatment for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea. Oral appliances work by repositioning the lower jaw, and move the tongue forward , thus opening the upper airway. Patient compliance and acceptance has been shown to be over 90%. They are comfortable, travel easily (as opposed to the CPAP machines), and are non-invasive.
Dr Chatila has extensive training in screening patients with snoring and sleep apnea problems , and treating them by selecting and fabricating the oral appliance suitable for each individual case. For patients who suffer from severe sleep apnea, she has established a solid referral system to ensure continuation of care.
